Why Cry Wolf?

Hungry Wolf is a cool name for a micropublishers, we know and you know. That’s why you’re here. How did we come up with such a cool brand and company? It all started with our dog, Pippin.

Pippin doing her best Doge impression. (She actually does live nearby the famous Kabosu, R.I.P.)

Pippin is a mixed dog our family adopted from a shelter just outside of Tokyo. At the time of writing she’s 14 years old, which is about 90+ in big-dog years. Pippin is very quiet and rarely howls, but she has a desperate hunger which drives her every waking and sleeping moment. Her nickname at home (one of many) is The Hungry Wolf.

Also, did you know that in China the term Hungry like a Wolf can refer to someone with a driving ambition. There are many expressions and literary associations with wolves that we like to riff on.

The Symbolism of the Wolf

The wolf embodies a profound duality, representing loyalty and solitude, instinct and intelligence. It’s the perfect emblem for a life lived with passion and depth. In mythology, wolves are both protectors and hunters, moving between the world of the living and the spiritual, embracing the wild and the wise within.

At Hungry Wolf Press, the wolf captures our ethos: to live fiercely, speak honestly, and create without fear. Here, under the wolf banner, our voices harmonize in their own untamed way, echoing the age-old call of the wild.

We also like to reference Howl, the famous poem by Alen Ginsberg that defined a generation of Beats. In fact there are loads of Wolf references we could ramble on about, but we think you get the picture.

Wolves are symbols of nature as well, and if you haven’t seen George Monbiot’s TED talk, “For more wonder, rewild the world”, we recommend it. He talks about the massive healing impact of wolves after they were reintroduced to the Yellowstone National Park in 1995. They created “trophic cascades” which are an ecological chain-reaction of good fluffy wolf love. Whales also do the same thing. If you haven’t seen this talk, that should be your next stop.

We chose the Wolf as our symbol and formed the press in 2018. A few years earlier in 2015, photographer Kerstin Langenberger shared a photo of a starving polar bear. The image went viral and became a symbol of climate change. That poor starving bear was in our minds as we set up Hungry Wolf, but Hungry Bear doesn’t have quite the same ring, and of course Pippin isn’t a polar bear.

Wolves are both solitary and social pack animals. We imagine most of you reading and supporting us at Hungry Wolf are a little on the introvert scale and know how it’s possible to be both.

The bottom line is Wolves are cool, their bark and their bite are not to be trivialised. Speaking of which.

Now, about Bezos…

Hungry Wolf Press exists to get good books into the hands of open-minded readers across the globe. While we believe in ethical, eco-conscious practices, we recognise Amazon’s platform offers a big reach, giving our authors and their books the visibility and accessibility we feel they deserve. By leveraging Amazon, we gain a streamlined distribution network and the power to bring our unique titles—and often forgotten, public-domain gems—back into the spotlight. This is all part of our mission: celebrating literature while making an impact.

As our product-line expands, so too will our options for how we do business. In the near future, we will be selling good quality eBooks and print-on-demand titles for out of copyright and public domain literature. We don’t want all those classics to pave the way for Bezos to fly to the Moon though, otherwise we really will have a reason to Howl. That’s why, for every public-domain book sold, we donate 10% of the proceeds to Project Gutenberg, helping to sustain the open access and preservation of literary treasures. Of course, you could just download those books free from Project Gutenberg in the first place, and pay them directly. You do you, ok.

Wolf Out

In summary then, wolves are cool, we have an actual wolf mascot, we love wolf stuff and we’re sorry about the mess the Earth’s in. Also, remember the Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt? The one that got all the crazy reviews and went viral. What more can we say…

So, I don’t know why you would have read all this way down to here, but this is the bit where we say a huge THANK YOU for all your love and support. For putting up with our crazy wild ways and “mad-ones” authors who burn burn burn. You people mean the world to us, your reading our work and supporting us makes us believe there truly is a lot of good in the human race and most of the bad stuff purely comes from ignorance rather than actual hatred. We know our writing can’t completely change the world, but we wouldn’t publish it if we didn’t think it made no impact. Whether non-fiction teaches you something, or our fantasy worlds and strange digital-age mashups tickle you with their electric spiky humour, we are grateful to you for supporting us. Wolf out.
